Eligibility Criteria: Must be non-U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, and proficient in English. Must secure an internship or training opportunity in the U.S. or be selected by a host company.
Interns: Currently enrolled full-time in a degree or professional certificate program, or graduated within the last 12 months. Internships must align with the field of study and can last from 3 weeks to 12 months.
Trainees: Hold a degree or professional certificate with at least one year of related work experience outside the U.S., or have five years of related work experience. Training programs can last from 3 weeks to 18 months. Additional training programs require a two-year residency outside the U.S. between programs.
Application Requirements: Recent experience in the field of the internship or training. Documentation of English proficiency. Intention to enter the U.S. solely for the internship or training. Applicants must not intend to change status while in the U.S.
For Host Companies:
Eligibility Criteria: Must have been incorporated and operational for at least one year with at least five full-time staff. Must have a valid Employer Identification Number and Worker’s Compensation policy. Must offer a structured, meaningful experience with robust training objectives.
Responsibilities: Provide a minimum of 32 hours per week of training. Ensure sufficient resources for supervision and mentoring. Facilitate cultural and educational opportunities. Adhere to all federal, state, and local labor laws. Ensure J-1 interns and trainees do not displace American workers and are not used for ordinary employment.
Restrictions: Interns and trainees cannot work in unskilled or casual labor positions or in roles involving more than 20% clerical work. Positions involving childcare, medical patient care, and certain trades (e.g., construction, home-based businesses) are not eligible.
Additional Requirements: Conduct interviews with applicants, documented via videoconference, phone, or in-person. Provide orientation and explain company rules and benefits.
